The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced this Friday the return of Brazil to the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) after four years, after leaving by decision of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

“At a time when its main international alliances are resuming, Brazil will once again form part of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur),” the Brazilian Presidency said in a press release.

The respective decree was signed on Thursday night by Lula, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the South American country.

It is expected that the re-entry of Brazil to Unasur, which was created in 2008 as part of forging an alliance of leftist countries, becomes effective on March 6.

“As well as Brazil, Argentina also announced that it will return to the block, which after having the twelve South American nations in 2010 and a total population of almost 400 million inhabitants, currently only has Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela, in addition to Peru. , which is suspended,” said the Foreign Ministry.

In a statement, the Brazilian government specified that the objective of Unasur is to “promote integration between South American countries”, integrating Mercosur and the Andean Community “beyond the economic sphere”, to achieve “social, cultural, scientific -technological and political”, reviewed Deutsche Welle.

Unasur was paralyzed for not being able to choose since 2017 a new secretary general to succeed the former president of Colombia Ernesto Samper.

In addition to the indecision to replace Samper, the conservative turn that the region took after the creation of the bloc and the different views on the Venezuelan crisis weakened the organization in recent years after the departure of Colombia, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Brazil as well as Argentina.

“Brazil ratifies its commitment to the consolidation of South America as a zone of peace and cooperation”pointed out Lula’s Foreign Ministry.
