The end point of the now defunct DCEU is approaching. After a week full of speculation and questions about its marketing, Warner finally decided to share a look at Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel with Jason Momoa and the latest DC film made under the command of Walter Hamada and prior to the rise of James Gunn as the new creative at the head of the comic book firm’s film division.

With the short teaser, Aquaman and the lost kingdom also revealed its synopsis. As speculated, the film will see the titular hero (Momoa) join forces with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to take on Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). After several delays, and with a trail of scandals, the film will mark the end of the DCEU and to leave all that attempted franchise behind, this is what is planned:
What is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom about?
After failing to defeat Aquaman, Black Manta, still seeking revenge for his father’s death, will not stop to take down Aquaman once and for all. On this occasion, Black Manta is more dangerous than ever by using the power of the mythical Black Trident, which unleashes a malevolent and ancient force. To defeat him, Aquaman will seek out his imprisoned brother Orm, the former king of Atlantis, to form an alliance. Together, they must put aside their differences to protect the kingdom from him and save Aquaman’s family and the world from destruction.

A curious omission is that of Mera, Amber Heard’s character, who starred in one of the most scandalous media trials of the century during her legal dispute with Johnny Depp. Her role in the film, after being found guilty of defamation, has given rise to something to talk about even when in the legal process itself it was revealed that her participation had been reduced due to her lack of chemistry with Momoa.
But that’s just the beginning, Aquaman and the lost kingdom They have also had unflattering headlines due to supposedly poor reception in test screenings. The inconsistency between the version of Batman that was going to appear in the film and the completion of a third round of reshoots, these promoted by Gunn, have washed away expectations to see the leader of Atlantis on screen once again.

On the other hand, the poor box office of Shazam! has done little to help him. The Fury of the Gods – 55%, The Flash – 60% and Blue Beetle – 74%, projects that have been affected by disinterest in the imminent reboot of the now called DCU. The studio is even more concerned that its high budget, due to the digital effects, will fail to be compensated taking into account that it will be released, almost certainly, during a strike that will prevent its charismatic protagonist from advertising the film.
The challenges are numerous for Aquaman and the lost kingdom. Although the original film surprised and exceeded expectations at the box office, James Wan and the studio find themselves in hostile and rough waters, so we will have to wait and see if the lack of expected releases at the end of December and the visual spectacle are enough to carry people to see DC’s most popular sea hero.
