Novak Djokovic beat Ben Shelton in straight sets and is the first US Open finalist. He awaits his contender on Sunday, who will come out of the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev.

The 20-year-old American could not repeat the spectacular performance that showed him as the revelation of the tournament and rather than due to Djokovic’s effectiveness, he fell due to his own inconsistencies. The one from Belgrade sealed his victory 6-3, 6-2 and 7(7)-6(4) in two hours and 41 minutes.

“Every day I wake up to work and improve, to be in shape and be able to play with today’s young people. Discipline is everything, it is a combination of many things, I have been in this for many years and I still feel happy doing what I do,” Djokovic said in the interview on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Regarding Sunday’s final, the three-time US Open champion praised his potential contenders, the Russian Daniil Medvedev and the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, who are competing in the second semifinal.

“Daniil beat me here a few years ago, he is a great player, with a lot of consistency and a very varied game. Then we have Carlos, who is playing incredibly, he is in his best moment, but with anyone I have to play with, I will give my best. better,” said the Serbian.

The Serbian just had to be on the lookout and wait for the right moments to add up. Shelton couldn’t control his momentum and made a lot of mistakes and if there is anyone with enough experience to take advantage of opportunities, it is Djokovic.

Shelton tried to get into the match in the third set and for the moment, return the dream of those who were at Ashe, of seeing an American reach the final of the US Open for the first time in 13 years.

In fact, Shelton arrived at the US Open as the first unseeded man to reach the semifinals in New York since 1998.

Djokovic’s victory puts him in all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar year for the third time in his career, a feat even more remarkable considering he is 36 years old.

And yet, it was Shelton that the public came to watch; but the young man remained a promise, perhaps because in front of him he had nothing more and nothing less, the tennis player who has the most awards in the history of tennis.
