Marc Márquez was coming off the longest drought of his life and in the space of a week he was able to celebrate two stellar victories that put him back at the centre of the MotoGP universe. The eight-time world champion displayed his most astute version under the drizzling rain at Misano to stage a textbook comeback from ninth place on the grid and win the San Marino GP ahead of Pecco Bagnaia and Enea Bastianini. All of them fished in troubled waters and took advantage of Jorge Martín’s blunder, who misread the threat of rain and lost a large part of his cushion at the top of the World Championship standings.
With 20 laps to go, the Pramac rider from Madrid thought that the rain was too much to continue riding on dry tyres and went into the garage to change bikes. He did so despite the fact that Bagnaia, right in front, decided to stay on track, as did the rest of the leading group. In those moments of doubt, which compacted the grid, Márquez put in a point more than the rest to make a tremendous splash and once again show everyone that he is still the fastest and the most skilled when things get complicated.
The victory in 1993 leaves him 53 points behind the leader, who remains Martín, who sees his lead over Bagnaia reduced to 7 points after crossing the finish line in 15th place, doubled by his main rivals for the title at Ducati.
