An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 shook Guatemala at 5:05 p.m. local timewith its epicenter in the municipality of Totonicapán, although no damage has been reported so far.

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) preliminarily reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6, however, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported on his Twitter account which reached 6.4.

It is reported that the movement, which could be considered an earthquake, was noticeable on the Pacific coast of Central America, including Nicaragua and some areas of Mexico.

For its part, the Mexican National Seismological Service reported the telluric movement on his Twitter accountwhere he mentioned that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2 about 70 miles east of the state of Chiapas, precisely in the area adjacent to Guatemala.

In various areas of Guatemala, scenes of panic and despair were recorded while the earth trembled; The Guatemalan Red Cross and the Volunteer Firefighters reported that they are monitoring to verify if there is damage from the earthquake, according to the local newspaper Guatevision.

Some media also reported that the tremor caused interruptions in the power supply and communications in some areas.

The state entity in charge of seismology at the national level explained that the initial information provided about the tremor is “preliminary” and that it was sensitive in a “mild” way in almost all of Guatemalan territory.

The duration of the telluric movement was not disclosed by the authorities, but according to various additional sources extended for more than 20 secondsaccording to the EFE agency.

Earthquakes are common in Guatemala, because it is located in the Pacific Belt or Ring of Fire, which concentrates some of the most important tectonic plate collapse zones in the world.
