A car driver who was competing in a race in Indiana died after suffering a spectacular accident on Saturday night, reported the US Auto Club (USAC).
Justin Owen, 26, was racing to qualify for the AMSOIL USA Speed Car National Championship at Lawrenceburg Speedway. In the middle of the race, his car collided with an outside wall causing it to spin several times in the third corner.
“USAC extends its deepest condolences to Justin’s family, team and many friends throughout the racing community.”said the organization in a statement, which announced the cancellation of the event.
Owens came from being a track champion with two notable victories and won the title in 2022.
Among the expressions of condolences, Tony Stewart Racing, one of the teams, spoke directly to Owen’s family and friends after what happened.
“It’s never easy to remember how fast things happen in this sport or that we weren’t promised tomorrow. We keep Justin Owen’s family, friends and fans in our prayers. We are very sorry for the loss of him, ”the racing team said on its Twitter account.
Meanwhile, the pilot Chase Briscoe lamented the tragic episodeand appreciated having faced him at various times in his career.
“I finished seventh tonight hitting the boards, had a lot of fun and appreciated the opportunity. After the race I found out about the passing of Justin Owen, I raced Justin quite a bit in sprint cars. Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” Briscoe said.
