Carlos Portillo, a member of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, was sentenced after being found guilty in connection with the machete murder of teenager Julio César Gonzales Espantzay at Massapequa Preserve, Long Island (NY).
Portillo received a sentence of 25 years to life in prison on Wednesday, reported News 12. He had been found guilty in January. The 19-year-old victim was lured to death by him after he a woman who worked with MS-13 promised him drugs and sex, according to the police.
According to the Nassau County district attorney, Portillo was one of several men who hacked Gonzales Espantzay to deathwhose body was found in March 2017, two months after being reported missing. Other men and a woman are already serving sentences for the death of Gonzales Espantzay.
Long Island and Queens are two of the areas with the highest presence of Mara Salvatrucha in the USA, where they are attributed dozens of murders and disappearances. The Central American origin group is associated with recruit young men and women, mostly of Latino origin.

In May Erasmo Humberto Lima Martínez, alias “Tun Tun”, also a member of the dangerous gang Mara Salvatrucha committed suicide in a federal prison in Brooklyn (NYC).
Previously in April 2022 the young Leniz Escobar, who called herself “La diablita”, was found guilty in connection with brutal slayings by the Mara Salvatrucha gang in New York.
