A 16 month old baby died after ingesting a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine while in his father’s care on Staten Island, police announced Wednesday.
The death of the child Sakani Kamagate occurred last February, But it wasn’t until this week that the medical examiner certified the death as a homicide.
According to the data offered by the police and collected by El Diario NY, the baby was cared for by his father, Adam Kamagate, at his home located on Hamilton Ave. near Academy Place, St. George neighborhood, when he was unconscious.
Noticing the child’s condition, the man contacted 911 at 4:07 a.m. on February 20. First responders took the boy to Richmond University Medical Center, where he died the same day. The baby was already in rigor mortis when he was taken to the hospital, said a police source quoted by the New York newspaper.
After an autopsy revealed the baby died from taking drugs, it was not immediately clear how he came into contact with them, the Daily News warned.
So far no one has been charged in the infant’s death, but the New York police are continuing their investigations.

Adam Kamagate, father of the victim, has a total of 28 arrests and he served three seasons in a state prison between 2003 and 2020, two for possession of weapons and another for drugs. He was also a suspect in a 2012 Staten Island homicide and a 2014 non-fatal shooting, according to police cited by El Diario NY.
In addition, they explained that after leaving prison in 2014, Kamagate was arrested in Binghamton, New York, with 283 packages of heroin. He was found guilty of attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance and sentenced to four years in prison.. He was released on parole in August 2019 until 2020.
